Tenerife is one of the few places in Europe where you can fly a paraglider in January in a T-shirt. The south of the island sits in the lee of Teide, which blocks most of the trade-wind cloud and leaves Costa Adeje with sun and a regular, predictable sea breeze. That is why the launch sites above Adeje work almost every month of the year.
The short answer
- October to May is the sweet spot: stable air, soft morning and late-afternoon light, and cooler temperatures at the launch. This is also the busy tourist season, so the best slots go first.
- June to September is still good, but the sea breeze is stronger and midday can be bumpy. We fly early mornings and the last hours before sunset.
- No month is a write-off. What stops a flight is wind direction and strength on the day, not the calendar.
What actually matters: the wind
A tandem paraglider needs a light to moderate wind coming up the slope at the launch. At Taucho and Ifonche that means a sea breeze from the south-west. On most days the breeze builds through the morning, peaks early afternoon and softens towards sunset.
That gives two reliable windows:
- Morning (roughly 9:00–11:30). Smoothest air, clear light, cooler. Our favourite for first-timers and families.
- Late afternoon (roughly 16:00–sunset). Warm golden light over the coast, air calming down. The best window for photos and video.
Midday can work on calm days, but it is the window we cancel most often in summer.
Winter: calima and the odd front
Winter brings two things to watch. Calima is a dusty haze from the Sahara that reduces visibility and sometimes comes with easterly wind, which is wrong for our launches; it usually lasts two or three days. Atlantic fronts occasionally bring rain and strong wind to the whole island. Both are visible in the forecast several days ahead, so we rarely cancel on the day.
Summer: strong breeze, early flights
In July and August the trade winds are at their strongest. The south is still flyable, but the midday breeze can exceed what we accept with a passenger. We schedule most summer flights before 11:00 or after 17:00, and we recommend booking the first slot of the day if you have fixed dates.
The High Flight from Izaña
The flight from below Teide (around 2,200 m) is a different animal. It needs light wind at altitude and a cloud base that allows a clean glide down to the coast. The most reliable months are April to June and September to November. In winter the road up can be closed by snow, and in midsummer thermals are strong. If you want the High Flight, give us a few possible days rather than one.
How to plan your trip
- Give us two or three possible days instead of one. The forecast decides which is best.
- Prefer morning or late afternoon slots.
- Book early in your holiday, not on the last day, so a weather move does not cost you the flight.
- Check the live conditions widget on our home page the day before; it shows wind and cloud at Taucho from Open-Meteo.
Whatever month you come, send us your dates and we will tell you honestly what the chances look like.
