What to wear and bring for your tandem flight

A short, practical checklist from a Tenerife tandem pilot: shoes, layers, sunglasses, what to leave in the car, and how to handle phones and cameras in the air.

You do not need any special gear for a tandem flight; we bring the harness, helmet and everything that flies. But a few choices make the morning more comfortable and the launch safer. This is the list we send to every passenger.

Wear

  • Closed shoes. Trainers are perfect. The launch is a few running steps on grass and gravel; sandals and flip-flops are a no.
  • Long trousers. Protects your legs at take-off and landing and keeps you warm in the air.
  • A light jacket or hoodie. The launch at Taucho is 800 m above the beach and a few degrees cooler; in the air there is always some wind. For the High Flight from Izaña bring a proper warm layer: it can be 15 °C colder than on the coast.
  • Sunglasses with a strap or a snug fit. The light over the sea is strong.
  • Sunscreen, especially in summer.

Bring

  • Your weight, roughly. We ask for it when you book so we choose the right wing. No need to be shy; it is a safety question, not a judgement.
  • A hair tie if you have long hair. Helmets and wind do not care.
  • Water for the drive up. There is nothing to buy at the launch.
  • ID if you are under 18 and flying with a parent’s consent.

Leave behind

  • Loose items in pockets. Keys, coins and phones in open pockets end up in a ravine. Zipped pockets are fine; otherwise we keep them in the car.
  • Big cameras and phones in hand. Nothing in your hands during take-off, flight or landing. It is the one rule we do not bend.
  • Heavy jewellery or anything that can catch on lines.

Phones, cameras and the video package

Passengers cannot film during the flight, for everyone’s safety. If you want footage, add the video + photo package: the pilot flies with a GoPro on a boom and a 360° camera, and you receive the full clips and photos on your phone the same day. It costs €35 per person and it is the thing people are happiest they added.

Glasses, contact lenses, hats

Glasses are fine; we can give you a strap. Contact lenses are fine. Caps and hats go under the helmet or stay in the car; nothing loose on your head.

A few words on nerves

Eat something light before, do not skip breakfast, and do not drink alcohol beforehand. If you are nervous, say so. The briefing is calm, the take-off is a gentle lift rather than a jump, and once you are in the air most people go quiet and just look.
